Protoss Opening Builds: The Four Gate

The Four Gate is a core strategy for every Protoss player, you should know and master this as it is very flexible and allows to follow up with any technology you need to counter your opponent build.

It is strong against mostly everything except some poor taste early rushes and depends when and how you manage your early Zealot(s).

You will want to prevent the enemy from scouting you before building the 3rd and 4th Gateways and knowing when you take second gas.

The supply values are approximate.

The build order:

7/10 - Probes - Keep making probes assigned to your mineral line.

9/10 - First Pylon - You will generally want this one to be close to the ramp to begin blocking it with further structures, and send the drone that placed the pylon into scouting.

11/18 - Chrono Boost Nexus (2 Probes) - Use the special ability of the Nexus on itself, you can boost it as soon as the Pylon is finished.

12/18 - First Gateway - Again, you can place this close to the ramp to narrow the entrance/exit of units.

12/18 - Chrono Boost Nexus (2 Probes) - After speeding these two, you want to keep producing probes to fill up the 18 supply available.

16/18 - Second Pylon - This one should be placed somewhere around the nexus.

17/18 - Cybernetics Core - You should have enough minerals to build this at this time, and the gateway should be complete now. Use this to block ramp aswell.

18/26 - First Assimilator - As soon as the assimilator is done, you need to select 3 probes from the mineral line and assign them to gas gathering at the assimilator.

19/26 - Train a Zealot - Assign it to clear the scout in your base or cover the ramp entrance if base is clear.

19/26 - Chrono Boost - Here you need to make a decision, you can either boost 2 more probes being built in Nexus, or boost the Zealot training, I usually choose Nexus.

22/26 - Second Gateway

24/26 - (Optional)Train Zealot - The first Zealot should be out now, and although I do recommend making a second Zealot if you fear being attacked/scouted, you can sometimes skip this step to build the rest of the Gateways quicker.

24/26 - Third Pylon

25/26 - Research Warp Gate - You can do this as soon as you have 50 minerals and 50 gas at the Cybernetics Core, since this research takes 140 seconds, you will usually want to Chrono Boost the Cybernetics Core doing the research to speed it up once.

25/26 - Third Gateway

25/26 - (Optional)Chrono Boost Nexus (2 Probes) - I like to keep a good macro, but you can cut these off to make last assimilator and gateway quicker.

26/34 - Second Assimilator - Again you need to assign 3 probes to it right after it is done to keep your gas up, especially if you want some Sentries.

27/34 - Fourth Gateway

30/34 - Fourth Pylon

31/34 - (Optional)Chrono Boost the Research Warp Gate - If your gateways are nearly complete, speed it up again so everything is done roughly at the same time.

35/42 - Upgrade your Gateways to Warp Gates - By this time research should be complete and you should warp in units as soon as possible.

The opening build is complete, you will need to build additional Pylons to support your waves of units warping in, and after 2 waves you generally want to push a bit and bring along a probe to build Pylon(s) nearer to the opponents base (these are called proxy pylons) so you can quickly warp in reinforcements into the fray.
